They say everything is bigger in Texas and this is true sometimes when it comes to windshield damage. With its unpredictable weather and sometimes hazardous road conditions, cracks, chips, and other forms of damage can riddle your windshield.
As a motorist in the great state of Texas, you need to understand whether your auto insurance covers windshield replacement. Below we have put a list of things you need to know about auto insurance policies in Texas and how they deal with windshield repairs and replacements.
Auto insurance policies are available in three forms of coverage; liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage. Each of them has their own unique approach to how they handle windshield damage.
Liability insurance covers any damages you cause to others when in a collision. It doesn’t cover damage to your vehicle, which means it won’t cover the cost of windshield replacement or repair.
Collision insurance will cover damage to your vehicle that results from a collision with an object or another vehicle. If you have this type of policy and the damage to your windshield is due to a collision then the cost of a windshield replacement may be covered. But, if there is a deductible, you will have to cover that out-of-pocket.
If you have a comprehensive policy then your chances are better. Comprehensive coverage includes damages caused by collision and those that are not. So, if someone throws a rock at your car while it’s parked, comprehensive insurance may cover it. You’re protected from storms and flying debris too.
Some insurance providers offer an option to waive the deductible, which is a nice option to have because damaged windshields are never planned. And we don’t always have the funds to pay for unexpected windshield damage.
Texas does not have a law that requires insurance companies to waive the deductible when you have a damaged windshield and need repair or a full replacement. If you have comprehensive insurance you may have to meet your deductible first. The same goes if you have collision coverage.
If your vehicle has Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) embedded into the windshield then yes, you will need a calibration so those safety features will work properly. So, it’s in your best interest to have the ADAS calibration done so you and your passengers are safe when out on the road.
